Roy Keane Offers Verdict on Liam Scales’ Red Card in Ireland’s 5-0 Defeat to England
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has shared his thoughts on Liam Scales’ sending off in Ireland’s 5-0 loss to England at Wembley.
The Celtic defender received a second yellow card and subsequent red card for tripping Jude Bellingham in the 50th minute, leading to a penalty converted by Harry Kane. The floodgates opened thereafter, with England scoring four more goals.
Keane, known for his candid opinions, surprisingly took a lenient stance on Scales’ dismissal. “The sending-off has a huge effect,” he said. “It’s obviously the right decision, and with the penalty, they lost belief very quickly.”
However, Keane shifted the blame away from Scales, suggesting that his defensive colleague Callum O’Dowda could have done better. “I think O’Dowda could have been in a bit tighter there. Ireland were just caught out a little bit, and it was a long way back.”
The Ireland legend acknowledged the significant impact of Scales’ red card, which changed the complexion of the game. “They conceded two or three from set pieces. It is hugely disappointing when you think about where they were at half-time. We said at half-time that England have the quality, but after the sending off, it’s the real lack of belief after going a goal down.”
Scales will now focus on Celtic’s upcoming fixture against Hearts at Tynecastle on Saturday.
