Brendan Rodgers Hails Celtic’s Resilience in 2-0 Win Over Kilmarnock
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers praised his team’s resilience and determination after their 2-0 victory over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, a win that sent the Hoops back to the top of the Scottish Premiership.
“It was a brilliant win for us. It was never going to be like last Saturday or Tuesday,” Rodgers said in his post-match press conference. “You know, Kilmarnock and what they do. They do it exceptionally well. They are very direct. They get it forward. You’ve got to fight and for that, the players deserve a huge amount of credit because they showed another side to the team.”
Rodgers acknowledged Kilmarnock’s physicality and direct style, emphasizing the importance of his team’s ability to adapt and respond.
“I think the supporters want to see you stand up and be counted in games like that,” Rodgers said. “The players did that very well. We would have suffered more [in the past]. I think that we did lose them [in the past]. That was the reality. We lost in that first six-month period. Now I think you see the difference in the team and the structure and the togetherness, the spirit, everything that you need to win a game like that.”
Celtic’s victory was sealed by goals from Callum McGregor and Nicolas Kuhn, with Kasper Schmeichel making crucial saves to secure the clean sheet.
“Kasper made some great saves,” Rodgers said. “You could see him with the ball as well, how he could play through the pressure, which is important. At times we could have held it up better to allow us to join in more.”
Nicolas Kuhn’s goal-scoring form continues to impress, with the striker now having contributed 21 goals (10 goals, 11 assists) this season.
“Aye, Kuhn’s numbers are incredible,” Rodgers said. “It’s absolutely brilliant but that’s his job. That’s why the money’s in his bank every month. He makes that contribution and he’s been so good.”
The win over Kilmarnock marks a significant milestone for Celtic, demonstrating their ability to adapt and respond to different challenges.
“I think we’re in a really good place,” Rodgers said. “I said to the players before the game that in life it’s really all about staying on your path. Sometimes that can be difficult but by staying on it you get your rewards in the end.”
With the international break looming, Celtic will return to action with a renewed sense of purpose and determination.
“We have a little break now,” Rodgers said. “Come back to the absolute ultramarathon spell where every single player will be needed. But it’s so exciting. I think that some of the play that we’ve seen, some of the fight that we’ve had today, I’m so pleased with that.”
