Norwich City’s Injury Crisis Deepens Ahead of Leeds United Clash
Norwich City’s woes have been compounded by a lengthy injury list, which is set to deprive them of several key players for their forthcoming clash with Leeds United. The Canaries, who are currently 11th in the Championship table, five points adrift of the play-off positions, will be without a raft of first-team players when they travel to Elland Road on Wednesday evening.
The latest player to join Norwich City’s injury list is centre-back Jose Cordoba, who has been ruled out of the trip to Leeds United due to a fresh knee injury. Cordoba’s absence is a significant blow to Norwich City’s defensive options, and his injury has left head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup with a selection headache.
Thorup’s midfield department has been particularly hard hit by injuries, with Marcelino Nunez, Liam Gibbs, Jacob Sorensen, Anis Ben Slimane, Gabriel Forsyth, and Tony Springett all currently sidelined. The Canaries’ attacking options have also been depleted, with leading marksman Borja Sainz serving the third match of his six-game suspension for a spitting offence.
New recruit Matej Jurasek is unable to feature due to post-Brexit regulations, while Ashley Barnes, Christian Fassnacht, Kaide Gordon, and Grant Hanley have all departed the club since the January transfer window opened. The sheer number of absentees has left Norwich City’s squad looking threadbare, and Thorup will be forced to rely on a number of inexperienced players to fill the gaps.
Despite the challenges posed by their injury crisis, Thorup remains optimistic about his team’s chances of causing an upset at Elland Road. Speaking ahead of the clash with Sheffield United, Thorup said: “It’s always exciting to play against the best teams in the league. Sheffield United are one of them and Leeds next week will be another one of them. It’s always exciting.
“We never go there to see it as a test or as an experience, we go there to win and to try and win in the way we want to do it. It builds so much into the rest of the season but also next season.
“There are many aspects of this – the psychological part, which is about what we’re going to do, how we’re going to approach it, how we want to create our passing game, and how much do we dare to do. That’s the style we always have, even travelling away from home knowing it’s been difficult for us, but we have to learn it, keep on doing it, take the learning out of it and see if we can be a little better in the next one.”
Leeds United, who are currently top of the Championship table, will be looking to capitalize on Norwich City’s injury woes and secure a vital three points in their promotion bid. With the Canaries’ squad depleted by injuries and suspensions, the Whites will be confident of extending their unbeaten run to 11 games.
