Craig Moore, the former Rangers defender, has highlighted a crucial oversight in Scottish football’s recruitment approach. Moore’s comments come amidst the struggles of Celtic’s £11 million summer signing, Arne Engels, to adapt to the Scottish Premiership.
Moore acknowledges Engels’ quality as a player but emphasizes the need for patience, citing the significant investment made in the youngster. However, he contrasts Engels’ difficulties with the seamless integration of homegrown talents like Luke McCowan, who joined Celtic for a fraction of the cost, and Connor Barron, a Rangers signing from Aberdeen.
Moore attributes the ease with which these players adapt to their familiarity with the Scottish league and its nuances. He told Go Radio: “A lot of money has been spent on Engels and certain players do need time. He is obviously clearly a very good player. But I keep coming back to something I think we keep overlooking in this country. You look at Luke McCowan, duck to water.”
Moore’s observations underscore the importance of considering the specific challenges and characteristics of Scottish football when recruiting players.
