Martin O’Neill Delivers Scathing Verdict on Rangers’ Title Chances, Leaving Graeme Souness Red-Faced
Martin O’Neill has reaffirmed his stance on the chasm between Celtic and Rangers, leaving Graeme Souness’s previous assertions in tatters. The former Celtic manager, renowned for his astute assessments, has consistently maintained that the gap between the two Glasgow giants is substantial.
O’Neill’s comments on talkSPORT (02/12/24 at 12:25 pm) served as a stark reminder of Rangers’ inability to mount a credible title challenge. “I don’t think he (Rodgers) has to worry too much because Rangers are so poor,” O’Neill remarked. “I have been saying this for some quite considerable weeks now. They aren’t a good enough side to challenge Celtic over a whole season.”
The legendary manager also referenced his previous disagreement with Souness, who had suggested that the gap between Celtic and Rangers was negligible. O’Neill retorted, “I had this argument with Graeme Souness some weeks ago that ‘there isn’t a big gap between them’, there is a massive gap between them. On any given Saturday and any given day, Rangers might pose a threat to Celtic for a match, but over a whole season, especially in league terms, not good enough.”
With Celtic holding an 11-point advantage over Rangers, O’Neill’s assertions appear increasingly vindicated. The champions’ dominance has been a hallmark of their campaign, with Brendan Rodgers’ side navigating the challenges of Champions League football with aplomb.
As Celtic prepare to face Aberdeen on Wednesday night, O’Neill warned against complacency, stating, “If Celtic are thinking Aberdeen are their main challengers, then… complacency? I don’t think Celtic will be complacent.”
The fixtures leading up to the New Year will be pivotal in shaping Celtic’s season. With a League Cup final against Rangers on December 15 and a crucial Champions League encounter against Dinamo Zagreb, Rodgers’ side will be eager to maintain their momentum.
