Former Celtic Star Dedryck Boyata Opens Up on Isolation and Disrespect at Club Brugge
Dedryck Boyata, a key player in Celtic’s historic invincible treble-winning season, has spoken out about his dismal treatment at current club Club Brugge. The 34-year-old Belgian defender has been frozen out of the team, forced to train alone, and isolated from his teammates.
In a candid interview, Boyata revealed the extreme measures taken by Club Brugge to keep him at arm’s length. He is required to train at home, away from the training centre, and is only allowed to visit the club in the afternoons. This restriction even extends to meal times, as Boyata is no longer permitted to eat at the club.
Boyata expressed his frustration and disappointment at being treated like an outcast. “Sometimes I train alone, sometimes with the reserves and regularly I get a program that I have to do at home – away from the training centre. I mainly struggle with the fact that I am isolated from everything and everyone.”
He also shared an incident where he was asked to change in a small room used by the cleaning crew, which he refused, opting instead to use the dressing room. Boyata feels that this treatment is disrespectful and undermines his mental well-being.
“They wanted me to change in a small room where the cleaning crew keeps their stuff. I refused. I pick up my clothes there and just do it in the dressing room. And because I’m only allowed to train in the afternoon, I can’t eat at the club anymore. That way they want to make sure that I have no contact with my teammates in any way. It’s like I have a hyper-contagious disease.”
Boyata’s situation has become increasingly dire, with no opportunities to showcase his skills, even in friendly matches. He feels that Club Brugge’s approach is designed to undermine his confidence and limit his chances of finding a new club.
“Mentally they try to undermine you. Yet I continue to do everything they ask of me. My situation is even worse now than before. I don’t have any chance to show myself anymore. Not with the A-team, not with the reserves and even participating in friendly matches is forbidden. This way I can’t find a new club.”
