Celtic and Rangers Set to Clash Over £60m Premier League Star Evan Ferguson
The Old Firm rivals, Celtic and Rangers, are poised to engage in a heated transfer battle for the services of Brighton’s highly-rated striker, Evan Ferguson. According to sources, both Glasgow giants are eager to secure the 20-year-old’s signature on a loan deal in January, with the Republic of Ireland international having been made available for a temporary move by the Seagulls.
Ferguson, who has been touted as a “special” talent by Jamie Carragher, has found himself struggling for playing time under Fabian Hurzeler at the Amex Stadium, making just one Premier League start this season. The £60m-rated striker’s frustration with his lack of action has prompted Brighton to grant him permission to explore loan options in January.
Celtic and Rangers are among a host of clubs, including West Ham, Southampton, Leicester, and Fulham, who have expressed interest in Ferguson. However, Brighton are adamant that any potential suitor must guarantee the young striker regular playing time during his loan spell.
Interestingly, Ferguson has a history with Celtic, having undergone a trial with the Hoops as a youngster. The Drogheda-born striker has also spoken publicly about his admiration for Celtic defender Liam Scales. When asked about Celtic’s interest in him during his time with St Kevin’s Boys and Bohemians, Ferguson revealed: “Nah I don’t think so, but I went on a few trials when I was younger.”
Ferguson’s response to being asked about his favourite Celtic player was also telling: “I don’t know. At the minute, I am going to say Liam Scales.” If Celtic can present an enticing proposal to Ferguson this winter, it is possible that he could be reunited with Scales at Parkhead for the second half of the 2024/25 campaign.
The prospect of Ferguson joining either Celtic or Rangers on loan has significant implications for the Scottish Premiership title race. With the Old Firm rivals currently locked in a battle for supremacy, the addition of a player with Ferguson’s caliber could prove a decisive factor in the destination of the championship.
