Celtic’s £1.4m Sale of Vakoun Bayo Looks Increasingly Shortsighted

Celtic’s decision to sell Vakoun Bayo to Gent for a mere £1.4m in 2021 is beginning to look like a grave mistake. The Ivorian forward, who was hailed as “powerful” by Chris Sutton, has rediscovered his form with Watford in the English Championship, and his statistics are now comparable to those of Celtic’s Adam Idah.

Bayo’s time at Celtic was underwhelming, to say the least. He managed just two goals and one assist in 17 appearances across all competitions, and was subsequently loaned out to Toulouse in the French second tier. Despite a respectable return of 13 goals and four assists in 36 games, Celtic opted to sell Bayo to Gent for a significant loss.

Fast forward to the present day, and Bayo is thriving with Watford. He has scored seven goals in all competitions, all of which have come in the Championship, and his duel success rate of 37% is impressive. In contrast, Idah has also scored seven goals in all competitions, but his duel success rate is slightly lower at 31%.

The fact that Bayo was sold for £1.4m, while Watford spent £5m to sign him in 2022, raises questions about Celtic’s transfer strategy. The Scottish giants may regret cashing in on Bayo, particularly given his resurgence in form with Watford.

It remains to be seen whether Bayo’s success with Watford will be a long-term trend, but one thing is certain – Celtic’s decision to sell him for a cut-price fee is looking increasingly shortsighted.
