Celtic’s Transfer Strategy Undergoes Significant Shift as Pundit Notes Ambitious New Approach
Former Celtic striker Andy Walker has observed a notable change in the club’s transfer model, indicating a desire to retain top talent and compete with Europe’s elite. The Scottish champions have historically adopted a successful buy-low, sell-high approach, exemplified by profitable sales of Kieran Tierney, Virgil van Dijk, and Fraser Forster.
Recent deals, such as Matt O’Riley’s £25 million move to Brighton, have reinforced this strategy. However, Walker suggests Celtic may now prioritize long-term retention of key players, citing Alistair Johnston’s impending contract extension and speculation surrounding Nicolas Kuhn’s potential new deal.
“Celtic are beginning to make their mark in the Champions League and when you speak to any Celtic supporter, it is what they’ve wanted to see for so long,” Walker told Go Radio. “I just wonder with Brendan Rodgers being there, Celtic spending at a level they have never really done before. They’d like to keep this idea of trying to compete with Europe’s elite.”
The club’s summer spending, including £11 million for Arne Engels, £9 million for Adam Idah, and £6 million for Auston Trusty, demonstrates this shift. Walker added, “He’s (Kuhn) been so consistent, he’s getting a lot of goals and also laying on a lot of goals. I just wonder if Celtic’s approach to their player trading model is maybe changing a wee bit.”
Walker’s comments come amidst Celtic’s impressive Champions League performances, including a convincing win over Leipzig and a draw against Europa League holders Atalanta.
