FIFA Exploring Alternative to VAR, Introducing “Coaching Challenges”
FIFA is set to trial an alternative to the contentious VAR system, dubbed Football Video Support (FVS), which would allow coaches to challenge refereeing decisions. This development comes as a welcome relief to Celtic supporters, who have been frustrated by VAR’s inconsistencies since its introduction in 2022.
According to ESPN, FVS would enable coaches to challenge two decisions per game, promoting greater accuracy without disrupting the game’s flow. Pierluigi Collina, former FIFA referee, emphasized the distinction between FVS and VAR: “Making clear that FVS is not VAR is critical, in particular in terms of expectations.”
Collina explained that FVS is designed to work with limited camera setups (4-5 cameras), focusing on clear errors rather than intricate offside decisions. “FVS is a more affordable technology that many more FIFA member associations can implement to help referees when needed. VAR and FVS are different solutions for different needs.”
The proposed system addresses concerns about VAR’s financial and human resource demands, which have hindered its implementation in smaller countries like Scotland. Celtic supporters will recall contentious VAR calls, including:
- Daizen Maeda’s disallowed goal vs. St Johnstone
- Denied penalty vs. Motherwell
- Kyogo Furuhashi’s incorrectly ruled-out goal vs. Rangers
FVS could alleviate such frustrations, providing managers with real-time challenges to ensure accurate outcomes.
Key Developments:
- FIFA trialing Football Video Support (FVS) as VAR alternative
- Coaches can challenge two decisions per game
- FVS designed for limited camera setups and financial resources
- Pierluigi Collina highlights distinction between FVS and VAR
- Potential implementation in competitions with fewer resources
This development offers hope for improved refereeing accuracy and consistency, and Celtic supporters will eagerly await further updates on FVS’s progress.
