Real Madrid Sets Sights on Tottenham and Everton Defenders in January Transfer Window
Real Madrid is reportedly keen to bolster its defensive lineup with the addition of Tottenham’s Cristian Romero and Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite in the January transfer window. The LaLiga giants are scrambling to find suitable replacements for injured defender Eder Militao, who will miss the remainder of the season due to an ACL injury.
Tottenham’s Romero Emerges as Top Target
Cristian Romero, who has been instrumental in Tottenham’s defensive setup, has caught the attention of Real Madrid. Despite previously rejecting their advances, Romero’s future at Tottenham remains uncertain. The Argentine defender’s contract with Tottenham runs until 2027, but the club has been unable to agree on a contract extension.
Tottenham values Romero at a staggering £150 million, a price tag that may deter Real Madrid. However, Romero’s desire for Champions League football may lead him to push for a move to the Spanish capital.
Everton’s Branthwaite Also on Real Madrid’s Radar
Jarrad Branthwaite, Everton’s highly-rated young defender, is another target for Real Madrid. The 21-year-old was heavily pursued by Manchester United in the summer, but Everton managed to retain his services.
Real Madrid considers Branthwaite an “important target,” but Everton’s £75 million price tag may prove a stumbling block. Everton is prepared to offer Branthwaite a lucrative new contract following the club’s impending takeover by The Friedkin Group.
Other Defensive Options for Real Madrid
Real Madrid has also been linked to RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba and Aymeric Laporte. Manchester City is reportedly interested in signing Federico Valverde, but Real Madrid is unwilling to sell without a significant offer.
Aurelien Tchouameni, meanwhile, may leave Real Madrid if a club matches his £100 million price tag. Liverpool is a potential suitor.
