Everton Eye World Cup Winner Gonzalo Montiel in January Transfer
Everton’s underwhelming start to the season has sparked urgency to strengthen their squad. Despite growing frustration among fans and calls for manager Sean Dyche’s departure, the Friedkin Group’s impending takeover is likely to grant him a stay of execution.
According to Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo, Everton have been handed a second chance to sign World Cup winner Gonzalo Montiel from Sevilla in January. The Argentine right-back was previously linked to Goodison Park in August, but negotiations stalled.
Montiel’s situation at Sevilla has changed dramatically, with the 26-year-old now surplus to requirements. Having played just 11 minutes of league football, Sevilla boss Garcia Pimienta seeks to replace him, potentially allowing Everton to secure his signature for a reported £3.3m.
The former Nottingham Forest loanee’s statistics surpass those of Ashley Young, Everton’s current right-back. Montiel excels in aerials won (1.40 vs 0.71), tackles (2.51 vs 2.35), clearances (3.49 vs 2.31), and assists (0.28 vs 0.13) per 90 minutes.
While Everton face competition from Premier League high-flyers Nottingham Forest, Montiel’s acquisition would significantly bolster their defense.
